Why Dental Assistant Temps Are Easier to Book on Short Notice

Why Dental Assistant Temps Are Easier to Book on Short Notice
(And What That Means for Practices + Temps)
If you’ve ever tried to fill a last-minute shift in a dental office, you already know the reality: short-notice staffing can make or break your day.
At Southern Ontario Dental Temps (SODT), we’ve noticed something interesting — and our internal data strongly supports it:
✅ Dental assistant temp shifts are often easier to fill on short notice than hygienist shifts.
That’s not a knock on hygienists. It’s simply a reflection of how schedules, workflow, and availability tend to differ between the two roles.
In this post, we’re breaking down why dental assisting temp coverage tends to move faster, the scheduling patterns behind it, and what it means for both dental practices and assistants looking for more flexible work.
A Record Month for Dental Assisting at SODT
Before we get into the “why,” here’s the real data.
We just had our biggest dental assisting month to date.
January Dental Assisting Stats
- 58 dental assistant shifts posted
- 42 shifts successfully completed
(Those 58 include shifts that were later cancelled by practices, as well as shifts we weren’t able to fill.)
Even with cancellations and unfilled shifts included, that’s a major milestone — and it’s a clear signal that dental assisting temp coverage is growing quickly across Southern Ontario.
Why Dental Assistant Temp Shifts Are Easier to Fill on Short Notice
1) Dental Assistant Schedules Tend to Have More Midweek Flexibility
One of the biggest reasons dental assistant temps are easier to book quickly is that assistants often follow the dentist’s schedule more closely.
Many dentists don’t work five full days a week — and some prefer:
- Taking mid-week days off
- Working a lighter schedule in certain seasons
- Running condensed schedules depending on procedure types
That creates more natural openings in assistant availability — especially on short notice.
2) Many Dental Offices Close More Often on Certain Days
In our experience, dental offices tend to be closed more frequently on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays — and some also reduce hours midweek depending on the practice.
That creates an interesting ripple effect:
When a practice is closed, their assistants aren’t necessarily “off work” in the traditional sense — many are open to picking up a shift elsewhere.
This creates a bigger pool of assistants who can step in for a day.
3) The Market Has Had Less Assistant Shift Volume (Until Now)
Another major reason dental assisting temp shifts can be easier to fill is a simple supply-and-demand reality:
For most of our first year, we posted fewer assisting shifts compared to hygiene.
So even though assisting is in high demand, there has often been:
- Less shift volume
- More available assistants per posted shift
- Less competition among practices trying to fill the same day
That’s changing fast — but right now, it still plays a big role.
4) Assistants Often Have More “Same-Day Fill” Potential
One thing we’ve noticed consistently is this:
📌 Dental assistants tend to have better success on same-day fills.
Why?
Because assistants’ schedules often include:
- Half-days
- Split schedules
- Shorter shifts
- Offices that don’t run hygiene every day
So an assistant may be fully booked at their main office most of the time — but still have more random gaps where they can jump in quickly.
5) Hygiene Is Usually Booked Further in Advance
On the flip side, hygiene schedules are typically planned further out.
Hygienists often have:
- Consistent recall schedules
- Long booking horizons
- Less “floating” availability midweek
So when a hygienist is off, practices often need coverage — but fewer hygienists have short-notice openings.
That’s one reason hygiene temping can sometimes require more lead time.
What Our February Data Is Showing So Far
Here’s another reason we’re confident in the strength of the dental assisting temp market:
So far in February, SODT has filled:
- 80% of Mondays
- 76% of Tuesdays
- 74% of Wednesdays
- 96% of Thursdays
- 96% of Fridays
- 100% of Saturdays
Even with short notice, these fill rates show that assistant coverage is becoming more reliable — especially later in the week.
Why Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays Fill So Well
Those Thursday, Friday, and Saturday numbers aren’t a fluke.
In many dental practices, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are common days where:
- Offices run reduced schedules
- Dentists work fewer clinical days
- Some offices close entirely
- Assistants become available to pick up extra shifts
So when another practice posts a shift on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, there’s often a bigger pool of assistants who can step in.
What This Means for Dental Practices
If you’re a dental practice, this is the big takeaway:
Dental assistant temp coverage can often be secured faster than you think.
Especially for:
- Sick calls
- Sudden cancellations
- Unexpected schedule changes
- High-volume days when you need another set of hands
If your office has ever tried to push through a day short-staffed, you know how quickly it affects:
- Patient flow
- Sterilization turnover
- Procedure timing
- Team stress
- End-of-day overtime
A dental assisting temp can protect the entire schedule — not just “help out.”
What This Means for Dental Assistants
For assistants, the takeaway is even more exciting:
Dental assisting temp work is becoming one of the best ways to pick up extra shifts quickly.
If you want:
- Flexible work
- Extra income
- Exposure to different types of dentistry
- A stronger network in your area
- More confidence and speed in different environments
Temping can accelerate your career faster than staying in one place.
And because assistant schedules vary more than hygiene schedules, assistants often have a stronger advantage for last-minute shifts.
Why We Believe Dental Assisting Temping Will Keep Growing
Dental assisting temp coverage is growing for a simple reason:
Practices are realizing that a short-staffed day isn’t just inconvenient — it’s expensive.
When a practice is down an assistant, it can lead to:
- Slower procedures
- Reduced patient volume
- Increased cancellations
- Burnout for the remaining team
- Dentists running behind all day
And for patients, it often means:
- Delayed treatment
- Longer waits
- Rescheduled appointments
The demand is real — and the need for reliable, short-notice dental assisting temps is only increasing.
The Bottom Line: Dental Assistant Temps Are Built for Short Notice
So, why are dental assistant temp shifts easier to book quickly?
Because dental assistants often have:
- More schedule variability
- More midweek openings
- More availability from closed-office days
- Less competition (for now)
- Better same-day fill potential
And as our numbers show, this is becoming one of the fastest-growing parts of what we do at SODT.
